The editors of this book have developed programs for the care of diabetic pregnant women based on the premise that establishing a normal physiologic milieu as reflected by blood glucose measurements will result in a normal outcome of pregnancy for the diabetic woman. This premise has been applied to Type 1 diabetic women (no beta cell function), Type 2 diabetic woman (insulin resistance) and gestational diabetic women. The hypothesis implies that hyperglycaemia is harmful to the foetal-maternal unit at each stage of gestation; and therefore, aggressive management programs are mandatory if optimum outcomes of pregnancies complicated by diabetes are to be assured.
